Motorcycle licenses
You need a license to ride a motorcycle. And that's an excellent idea when you consider that motorcycles are a practical means of transport, but far more dangerous than cars. That's why it's so important to learn how to ride it more rigorously.
There are 4 different motorcycle licenses:
- The AM license, which allows you to ride a motorcycle with a maximum displacement of 50 cm3 and a maximum power of 4 kW,
- The A1 licence, which authorizes the use of motorcycles with a cylinder capacity not exceeding 125 cm.3 and power not exceeding 11 kW,
- The A2 license, which limits authorized power to 35 kW,
- And the A license, which has no maximum power rating.
If you have the latter license, you and I both know that you didn't go to all that trouble (the motorcycle license has a pretty impressive failure rate) to make do with a motorcycle rated at less than 35 kW.
You certainly want a motorcycle that pulls generously on your arms with every acceleration, and you're right. In this article, we'll be concentrating on electric motorcycles available only to holders of an A license, with a power rating of over 35 kW (47.5 hp).
The figures for the A licence
Before going into more detail about the best powerful electric motorcycles available to A-license holders, I'd like to remind you of a few figures. It never ceases to amaze me that electric motorcycles seem to attract far less interest from manufacturers, despite their obvious potential.
I'm not going to get into discussions about the ecological benefits of electric motorcycles. They're obvious, even if I still see room for improvement. What I don't understand so well is the financial interest that manufacturers fail to see.
According to StatistaA licenses accounted for over 6% of B licenses issued in 2014, 2015 and 2016. That's quite a lot, since it represents more than 50,000 new A licenses per year.
And it's a safe bet that these new bikers are increasingly sensitive to the ecological cause.
No doubt they'd like to see a slightly larger market for electric motorcycles, which would enable them to choose the electric motorcycle that meets their needs. For the moment, as you'll see, that's not the case.
The electric motorcycles I'm about to present to you are very good bikes, but they're still very expensive and too few in number to meet the diversity of needs. So this is an appeal to motorcycle manufacturers: go electric, you won't be disappointed!
Having said that, let's move on to what interests us most: the list of the 5 best electric motorcycles for A-licenses.
