The different types of quadricycles
It's sometimes forgotten, but small cars are a peculiarity of the European market, and are governed by its laws. There are two categories, depending on the weight of the vehicle in particular.
Light quadricycles
- Their unladen weight must not exceed 425 kg.
- Their power must be less than or equal to 6 kW.
- For internal combustion engines, their cubic capacity is limited to 50 CC for petrol engines and 500 CC for diesel engines.
- They must be no more than 3 m long, 1.50 m wide and 2.50 m high.
- They can only have two seats.
You can drive this type of car from the age of 14, once you've obtained an AM license, or a road safety certificate (BSR option quadricycle léger).
Heavy quadricycles
- Their unladen weight must not exceed 450 kg (except for goods vehicles, which are limited to 600 kg).
- Their power must be less than or equal to 15 kW
- They must not exceed 3.70 m in length, 1.50 m in width and 2.50 m in height.
- Their speed is limited to 90 km/h
As of October 1, 2022, roadworthiness tests for electric cars without a license will be compulsory. It must be carried out within 4 years of the vehicle's registration, and then every two years thereafter.
