Kia Niro EV video test drive
Formerly known as the Kia e-Niro, the Korean manufacturer is giving this model a new name: the Kia Niro EV. The Korean manufacturer's ambition is to leave no counterargument to the electric car - namely price, performance and range.
To give you a clearer idea of this car, we've put together a video test of the Kia e-Niro.
Good to know: despite the change of name for this electric car, there are some similarities between the old and new versions.
Electric cars are increasingly adapted to the habits of the average motorist. The Kia Niro EV - alongside its Hyundai Kona Electric sibling - is one of the first to reach its full potential, especially in 64 kWh. It's a spacious five-door family car offering the performance, range and short charging times to suit all manufacturers.
However, while the two models are closely related in terms of platform and powertrain, the Kia offers clever technology, more conventional styling and greater practicality. The all-electric Niro closely resembles its hybrid and plug-in hybrid cousins, albeit with a few subtle design changes.
If you look closely, you'll notice the new 17-inch alloy wheels that come as standard. The trunk features revised trim to match that of the front, contributing to a more aerodynamic and efficient shape.

The Kia Niro EV 64 kWh, a spacious SUV
The interior is very similar to other Niro models. There's a rather sober, functional dashboard and enough space for five people. One of the few changes is in the center console: the standard gear selector has disappeared, replaced by a rotary dial. This modification also offers a little more storage space.
The 475-liter trunk is generous in size (larger than a Nissan Qashqai but a little smaller than a Peugeot 3008 or SEAT Ateca), and there's plenty of room under the floor to store charging cables.
The first edition is very well equipped, with heated leather seats, rearview camera, forward collision warning, lane-keeping system and JBL stereo.
The Niro EV features a 204 hp motor in 64 kWh version that drives the front wheels; as does the 64 kWh battery, a motor similar to that of the Hyundai Kona.
The engine's power enhances the Kia Niro EV's performance far beyond that of the hybrid.
Although it's not quite possible to drive the Niro EV with a single pedal like in a Nissan Leaf, the three levels (four if you include the ability to coast) make the most of the car's charge. As with the Nissan Leaf, it is possible to bring the vehicle to a complete stop by keeping the paddle on the steering wheel, but the function is not automatic as it is on the Leaf. Kia claims that, under the more stringent WLTP test procedure, the vehicle will be able to travel 460 km on a single charge. In urban driving, the official figure soars. In other words, the overwhelming majority of drivers will only need to recharge their Niro EV once a week - if that.
Of course, the charging process isn't as convenient as a two-minute fill-up in a gasoline-powered car, but plug the Niro EV into a 100 kW rapid charger and 54 minutes later, you'll have recharged the batteries from 10% to 80%. So count on a one-hour break on your very long journeys.
If you're looking for a no-compromise electric car, the 64 kWh is an excellent choice, thanks to its comfortable range, meticulous finish and wide range of options. This 64 kWh family SUV is priced at €41,990 (excluding environmental bonus), from which you can deduct the various regional subsidies for which you may be eligible. Add to this the savings on fuel and maintenance, and the Kia Niro EV costs less than a Peugeot 3008.
