The Nissan Leaf is the world's best-selling electric car. Long shunned by the French in favor of the highly acclaimed Renault Zoé, the Nissan Leaf e+ 2019 makes up for lost time by offering what previous generations lacked: greater range and unrivaled driving pleasure.
Nissan Leaf e+ video test drive
"The king is dead, long live the king".
The Nissan Leaf, originally launched in 2010, has sold 400,000 units worldwide. A record. Consumers eagerly awaited the e+ version, with its 62 kWh battery. This version brings what the 2015 version lacked: a range of almost 400 km. In this way, Nissan discourages the last incorruptibles from sticking with a combustion-powered vehicle.
The Nissan Leaf e+, the best of the Leaf
Apart from a chrome "Plus" label under the finish badge on the tailgate and a blue lower front bumper trim, the changes are not visible from the outside of the car. Inside, there's an 8.0-inch central touchscreen rather than the standard car's 7.0-inch unit.
The major change, of course, is a redesigned battery in a different casing. It uses slightly higher density cells to deliver 62 kWh, compared with 40 kWh for the standard Leaf.
The Leaf e+ has a power rating of 160 kW (210 hp), compared with 110 kW (147 hp) for the standard 40 kWh model.
On the road, the Nissan Leaf e+ is pretty much what we expected: a more powerful Leaf with a longer range.
The ride is comfortable, the steering is adequate and, for the first time, it offers enough pick-up to overtake at any speed, including the maximum speed on the freeway.
The Leaf is just as good when stationary, and offers one-pedal driving characteristics. This generation offers e-Pedal, for more efficient battery recharging: simply lift your foot off the pedal gradually to activate regeneration. It's easy to get used to this one-pedal driving mode, and quite fun. But if you prefer a more traditional braking experience, the Leaf combines regenerative braking and mechanical braking - there's no difficult transition between the two.
With the weight of the heavy battery under the cabin to keep the center of gravity very low, the Leaf handles winding roads rather well. with controlled cornering characteristics.

Selecting an electric vehicleCharging the Nissan Leaf e+
A big advantage of the Nissan Leaf e+ is that its standard charging cable can support plug-in charging without you having to spend a single euro to install a wallbox at home. Instead, all you need is a 220-volt plug, and once you're recharged, you're ready to hit the road.
For those requiring fast charging, a switch to a 100 kW charger can take the Leaf e+ from 0 to 80% in 45 minutes, although this type of fast charge is still hard to find. Using a more common 50 kW charger, 80% of battery power can be reached in just one hour.
From what we could see, the e+ looked set to reach its maximum of 385 kilometers if we let the battery discharge all the way.
The Nissan Leaf e+ starts at €43,700, and in 2019 the range has been greatly expanded since its introduction to the market, notably by its Korean cousins Kia Niro EV and Hyundai Kona, offered at equivalent prices and with slightly longer ranges than the Leaf e+. Nevertheless, the Leaf is a compact car, and for urban and suburban use, it's a perfect match. So, do you prefer city or country travel?
