Electric cars: what are the delivery times?

Delivery time electric car

While the government encourages motorists to make the energy transition with electric carsthe semiconductor shortage is beginning to be brought under control, but delivery times are relatively long. But why is this? Are there any alternatives? Let's find out.

The last two years have been difficult, especially for electric vehicle manufacturers faced with the semiconductor shortage. With 2023 just around the corner, it's likely that manufacturers are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Electric cars are on the rise again. In fact, on November 9, 2022, sales of electric cars and plug-in hybrids reached 1 million electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. This is a record compared with October 2021, representing a increase of 6.4%..

What is the waiting time for a new vehicle?

The waiting time after ordering a vehicle varies from brand to brand, depending on the options chosen by the customer. On average, the waiting time is estimated at around 6 months, and the brands do their utmost to meet this deadline and enable their customers to benefit from the environmental bonus.

Good to know: as the ecological bonus is set to change on January 1, 2023, it's advisable to order an electric vehicle now. What's more, the billing period has been extended to June 30, 2023for all orders placed before 12/31/2022.

Why don't all brands have the same delivery times?

In addition to the shortage of semiconductors that affects all brands, here are some answers that may explain the different delivery times:

  • different brands have different construction methods (different production sites, different raw material suppliers, etc.)
  • some brands are much more in demand than others: manufacturers will give priority to models that are in high demand, and "leave aside" electric cars with specific options.
  • manufacturers want to avoid fines: as of January 1, 2020, the European authorities have introduced a CO2 emissions threshold for carmakers: the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) regulations. This CO2 emission threshold must be less than or equal to 95 kg per km. If this threshold is exceeded they will have to pay a sum based on the average emissions produced by the number of electric vehicles sold over the year.

Why the delay in delivering electric cars?

Despite a slight improvement on the semiconductor front, the situation is unlikely to improve any faster than lightning. Several factors are at play:

Lack of logistics

One of the reasons why owners don't receive their vehicles on time is the lack of boats to transport them. As a result, over 100,000 vehicles stuck in the ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge. What's more, freight forwarders have had difficulty delivering vehicles due to the fuel shortages that France has experienced in recent months. Indeed, following following the industrial action taken by TotalEnergies employees, many motorists and especially hauliers ran out of fuel to deliver orders on time.

Lack of stock

To build an electric car, specific raw materials are needed, such as lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese. The problem is that these prices of these raw materials are also soaringThis makes it even more difficult to access these elements for production, and in turn lengthens delivery times.

Weakened production plants

The situation in which the Ukraine is currently finding itself makes manufacturers like Volkswagen in Germany, since the country is the main source of spare parts. Until a solution is found, the German brand's production plants have been forced to close for several days.

For Teslain addition to the shortage of semiconductors, the American brand was hit by a lack of ECUs (electronic control units) for its charging ports. In addition, due to a spike in covid cases in China, the Zero Covid-19 policy was introduced. As a result of these events, factories had to close for 2 days in March 2022 and for several days in the following month. As a result, a number of employees were cut back and confined to building Tesla electric cars.

Strong demand for electric cars among motorists

Another reason is the booming demand for electric cars.he booming demand for electric cars. In fact, 2022 was once again a record year, with the milestone of 1 million electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids were registeredwith an increase of 6.4% compared with October 2021, and a market share approaching 20%. ! This rise can be explained by President Emmanuel Macron, who is putting more and more devices in place to facilitate the energy transition for all French motorists, including :

With all these problems combined, two years would be the minimum time for the situation to return to normal and for customers to receive their vehicles on time, according to experts in the field. But what can be done to avoid delivery delays?

What does the government plan to do about it?

Emmanuel Macron would like to find a solution to reduce delivery times for new vehicles. In July 2022, he visited the STMicroelectronic site in Crolles (near Grenoble), to present a strategy for doubling the production of electronic components in France by 2030, with the construction of a new semiconductor plant.

To achieve this strategy, the government will invest 6 billion euros to double the production of electronic to meet the needs of French and European industries in the automotive, telephony and artificial intelligence sectors.

The implementation of this action plan will enable us to become a little more independent from electronic components, and above all to have a 100% made in France productionas Emmanuel Macron wishes for the coming years.

An alternative in the event of late delivery?

As we have already seen, automakers are finding it difficult to meet their customers' orders, due to the shortage of semiconductors. As a result, it's difficult for manufacturers and dealers to answer the question "when will I get my electric car?".

In that case, are there any alternatives until the electric car is delivered?

One of the first things to do is to check the delivery date mentioned on the contract you have or will sign (as defined by the decree of June 28, 2000). If this date is not indicated in the contract, the seller will have until the fifteenth working day to deliver the electric car. This new date must be mentioned on the order form.

What can you do to avoid delivery delays?

Before you commit to buying an electric car, check whether the car you want is still available. Manufacturers usually update their lead times.

Bear in mind that the more you customize your electric car (choice of color, option or option pack), the longer the delivery time. So it's best to choose a vehicle that's in stock.

Since these steps are time-consuming, our experts at Beev experts take care of everything.

To finish 2022 on a high note, Beev is offering several electric cars for delivery before the festive season. Take advantage, because this flash offer ends on December 31, 2022.
