Performance

In terms of power, the Tesla Model 3 is obviously superior to the Kia Niro EV.

Previously, the Kia Niro EV offered two engine ranges.

  • The 64 kWh is rated at 204 hp. This enables it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds.
  • The Kia E-Niro 39 kWh with a much smaller battery can do it in 9.8 seconds, thanks to its 100 kW (136 hp) motor.

From now on, the Kia Niro EV model is only available in 64 kWh.

The Tesla Model 3 is available in three powertrains:

  • motorization range Standard plus engine range, with a 202 kW (275 hp) electric motor, accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds.
  • The performance" finish finish of the Model 3, with its powertrain, far exceeds expectations for an electric car, with a 0-100 km/h time of 3.4 seconds.
  • As for the Tesla model 3 grande autonomie reaches 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, which is impressive for a range whose primary objective is autonomy.

The Model 3's power and torque are on a par with other renowned sports cars.

In fact, some Supercars, such as the Nissan GT-R Nismo, have practically the same 0-100 km/h time.

Autonomy

For both models, we can say goodbye to the stress surrounding the range of electric cars. So, of course, they are tied on range.

For Kia, the Korean manufacturer has made a point of making the Niro EV the only vehicle for families. In other words, it has been designed for both daily commuting and long-distance driving.

Despite a lower-capacity battery than the Tesla Model 3this lightweight model offers equivalent range.

What's more, the energy recovery system ensures greater autonomy when combined with the four available driving modes (Sport, Normal, Eco, Eco+).

The Kia Niro EV promises a range of up to 460 km(WLTP standard) in the combined cycle, and faster recharging thanks to a new 10.5 kW charger capable of using three-phase AC current.

As for Tesla, the Model 3 has a range of 547 km. Thanks to Tesla's numerous Supercharger stations, you can recharge 80% of the battery in 30 minutes.

However, at home, you'll have to wait 12 hours and 40 minutes to reach 100% charge at 7 kW.

Dimensions and weights

Tesla's electric sedan and Kia's SUV are family cars. Trunk capacity and size are key points in this comparison.

The American manufacturer boasts a load capacity of 542 liters, very comfortable for its range, compared with 475 liters for the Niro EV.

However, the 60/40 split seats provide a maximum volume of 1405 liters. This gives it a considerable advantage in terms of space.

At 1,757 kg, the Kia Niro EV is considerably lighter than the Tesla Model 3. The Kia Niro EV offers a spacious, comfortable cabin for 5 passengers.

The Tesla weighs in at 1850 kg. The interior is very minimalist, in keeping with Tesla's philosophy from the outset.

Availability and prices

Priced from€41,990 in its 64 kWh version, the Kia Niro EV is a little less expensive than the Tesla Model 3.

In 2020, Kia launched a new a new trim level for small budgets with the aim of bringing electric cars to as many people as possible. The Motion trim starts at €41,990, excluding the environmental bonus, followed by €43,990 for the Active trim, and €45,590 for the Premium trim.

On the other hand, it should be noted that the Active range (available from €39,000) €) that the car's various options and functions begin to rival Tesla's technological monster.

Drive Wisethe new label dedicated to the development of Kia's driving assistance and autonomous driving systems, aims toincrease safety and peace of mind on the road. The arrival of the new 10.25" inch navigation system and UVO Connect, which, like Tesla, ensures synchronization between smartphone and car.

For Tesla, the car's minimalist interior reveals only a 15-inch screen with a wealth of functions and essential navigation information.

Everything is designed to optimize cabin space and make thedriving experience more comfortable.

Who's the big winner?

Affordable, practical and high-performance, the Kia Niro EV is making its mark in the SUV market.

With a range that rivals that of theAudi e-tron and, of course, the Tesla Model 3, the Kia Niro EV is an excellent choice. It could even be the household's main car!

Despite a better-equipped Tesla Model 3, the Kia Niro EV remains a little more affordable, with a starting price of 41,990 (excluding environmental bonus) and a 7-year manufacturer's warranty covering the battery and electric motor.

Kia is one of the only carmakers to offer a 7-year or 150,000 km warranty in Europe. This warranty allows you to benefit from reduced maintenance costs. It also guarantees superior resale value, as it can be passed on to the future owner.

With an entry price starting at 44,990 the Tesla Model 3 assumes the role of a premium vehicle compared with the Kia Niro EV, which offers exceptional performance for an electric car. The basic vehicle comes with a 4-year or 80,000 km warranty. However, the battery and powertrain come with an 8-year warranty, reassuring customers of the durability of these components.

In conclusion

As we have seen, these 2 vehicles are totally different and do not meet the same needs.

While the Tesla Model 3 presents itself as a premium sedan with a high-performance engine, the Kia Niro EV is positioned more like a family SUV.

With both offering long autonomy, it's not really possible to decide between the two models. The choice will depend on your needs.

If you're looking for a more classic, affordable electric car with good performance features, the Kia Niro EV fits the bill perfectly.

However, if you're looking for more advanced technology and an engine that can compete with combustion-powered sports cars. The Tesla Model 3 is just what you need.

L'year 2022 will be the year of the electric car. Only time will tell whether Tesla and Kia will maintain their lead in the electric market.
