Kia e-Niro

Please note: battery leasing is no longer offered at all on the electric vehicle market.

Battery leasing for electric cars is a practical way of diluting the cost of the battery over the monthly instalments and acquiring a vehicle at a lower cost. However, it's not for everyone, especially if you want to keep your vehicle for a long time. What's more, if you're going to be doing a lot of kilometers a month, the price of the lease will also increase. That's why a "full" purchase (vehicle and battery) is the best option for you.

Once you'vepurchased your electric vehicle, you don't have to worry about battery leasing, which is built right into the price. What's more, your annual mileage has no impact on the price of the vehicle.

The manufacturers offering battery leasing for electric cars are Renault, which makes it compulsory on all its models, and Peugeot and Citroën. Nevertheless, these automakers are increasingly allowing the possibility of full purchase from their vehicles. At Nissan, for example, it is no longer possible to lease a battery. In fact, the purchase of the battery is required when purchasing an electric vehicle from the Japanese manufacturer.

Electric vehicles offering a choice between full purchase and battery leasing are :

To the delight of buy-it-now campaigners, BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen, as well as Korea's Kia and Hyundai, only offer buy-it-now on their vehicles. And more, Peugeot no longer offers battery leasing on its new models, demonstrating a certain lack of interest on the part of drivers in this offer.

Why do some electric cars come with battery leasing?

For carmakers, most of whom are French, battery leasing makes electric cars more accessible to the general public.

With a reduced acquisition cost when purchasing a battery leased vehicle, carmakers can attract people who are still hesitant about electric vehicles. In fact, the electric battery represents between €4,000 and €10,000 of the final price of a vehicle, depending on the manufacturer. Thanks to battery leasing, the price of an electric vehicle under battery lease is on a par with the price of internal combustion vehicles.

The second advantage of battery leasing is the guarantee that the battery will always be operational. Indeed, the battery of an electric vehicle represents a fear for the most ill-informed, as it is often seen as unreliable. Today, electric car batteries are proving their efficiency, thanks to the democratization of 100% electric vehicles.

To ensure battery capacity, battery leasing is now replaced by a vehicle and battery warranty when the vehicle is purchased outright. Most manufacturers now offer warranties ranging from seven to nine years, to reassure the driver when purchasing an electric vehicle.
