Sono Sion: a success before its official launch

Barely announced in the summer of 2022, the Sono Sion is already a hit with motorists and is eagerly awaited for 2023with 20,000 reservations for this electric carhave already been registered. To be able to acquire it, customers had to pay a deposit of €500, in order to have a copy of this electric car to reserve.

Sono Motor plans to start production of the electric car in the second half of 2023, in collaboration with Valmet Automotive, a Finnish company. Sono Motor has chosen to work specifically with Valmet Automotive, due to its expertise in the manufacture of new-technology cars. 

In relation to its official release, deliveries will begin by the end of 2023, with a estimated price of €29,000 in Germany. The price in France has not yet been determined.

Sono Motors Sion: an atypical look

In the summer of 2022, Sono Motors, a German company based in Munich, decided to present to the general public a first version of this electric car virtually covered in solar panels

What makes the Sono Sion such a novelty on the automotive market is its remarkable looks. According to the company, 456 half-cells are installed on the body of the electric car. These panels are placed on the roof, hood, doors, tailgate and also on the wings).

So, in addition to the electric battery, the electric car is powered by the sun's rays, captured by the cells. 

As new technologies continue to develop, the Sono smartphone app will allow you to monitor your car remotely, check the battery status and even use it as a digital car key.

Optimum performance

With the new technologies integrated into the Sono Sion, it promises a range of over 300 km. According to Sono Motors, thanks to the new technologies and the daily journeys that motorists will be able to make, they will gain between 112 km and 245 km of additional range when the weather's fine.

This solar-powered electric car also boasts a 54 kWh battery capacity and offers flexible charging:

  • with accelerated charging and maximum AC power of 11 kWthe car recharges in around 5 hours, from 0 to 100%.
  • it takes around 35 minutes to recharge the electric car from 0 to 80%, on a fast charge with maximum maximum DC power of 75 kW.
  • Sono Sion can be recharged at any public charging station in Europe 
  • possibility of recharging another electric vehicle with the Sono Sion. In fact, thanks to V2L (Vehicle to Load) technology, also known as bidirectional charging, the Sono Sion will be able to share its power with another electric car to recharge it.

As for the future of this solar electric carSono Motors has set a target of achieving 250,000 Sion within 7 years.. What can also be said about the Sono Sion is that, given the number of pre-orders registered, it's clear that the solar electric car has potential. It also shows that there is a real need among motorists, and that it has what it takes to become the first electric car with integrated solar panels to be produced in large quantities.
