In France, the number of charging stations has exploded in recent years. Today, according to figures as at 31 January 2025 from theAvere-FranceThere are 157,348 recharging facilitiesor 31 % more in one year. In January 2025 alone, 2,654 new terminals have been installedThis is a sign that the transition to electric vehicles is gaining momentum.
But while driving electric is becoming more and more accessible, you still need to be able to recharge quickly. And today, 10 % of terminals in France are ultra-fastcapable of restoring several hundred kilometres of range in less than 20 minutes. Their number literally doubled in 2024 (+114 %), with 7,000 terminals exceeding 150 kW of power. This is a huge change for drivers who want to fill up without waiting.
To take things even further, a consortium of major players in the sector is planning toto invest €3 billion to install 30,000 new ultra-fast charging stations by 2028. The government is aiming for 400,000 public charging points by 2030. The aim is clear: to ensure that no-one is left without a recharging solution, whether in town or on the road on holiday.
Despite this progress, inequalities remain. On average, there are 234 terminals per 100,000 inhabitantsBut it all depends on where you are. L'Île-de-France is well equippedwhile some rural areas or French overseas departments are still lagging behind.
Improving this distribution will be a key challenge over the next few years.
While electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, the challenge now is to making recharging even simplerfast and accessible to all. The momentum is there, and all the signs are that the next few years will see a unprecedented acceleration of these infrastructures.
