Definition - Hydrogen vehicle
A hydrogen vehicle is a vehicle whose motive power is based on hydrogen. This type of technology can only be integrated into vehicles with electric motors.
"The fuel cell is the key component of a hydrogen-powered vehicle. In the fuel cell, a redox reaction takes place, creating electricity. To do this, the cell transforms a fuel, such as hydrogen, into electricity and water, thanks to oxygen.
In this sense, a hydrogen-powered vehicle emits very little pollution when in use, since the fuel cell that powers it emits only water.
Advantages
- Can be produced from any source
- Emits very few pollutants during use
Disadvantages
- 95% of hydrogen is produced from hydrocarbons
- This process emitsCO2, a greenhouse gas.
In this sense, this type of hydogen power supply considerably increases therange of electric vehicles. Because, yes, despite the use of a fuel, hydrogen-powered vehicles are classified as electric vehicles. In fact, the fuel cell either powers the electric motor directly, or, in the case of certain vehicles, powers the motor via a battery.
By 2020, 158 hydrogen filling stations will be listed in France. It's easy to see how hydrogen power is already entering an initial phase of commercialization.
Some models of hydrogen-powered vehicles :
- Audi A7 Sportback h-tron concept.
- Audi h-tron Concept Audi h-tron quattro Concept.
- BMW i Hydrogen NEXT concept.
- Honda Clarity Fuel Cell.
