Dacia Spring electric: the low-cost electric car?

Dacia Spring low-cost EV

Is a low-cost electric car possible? Can we break the €20,000 barrier? That's the challenge facing the electric Dacia Spring, which aims to revolutionize the electric car market with a model due for release in the first half of 2021.

The electric revolution is underway, and manufacturers of low-cost vehicles don't intend to miss this opportunity. Dacia is proof of this with its Spring Electric Concept, a small elevated vehicle that should be equipped with a small electric motor.Range is the only thing we can be virtually certain of, with the Franco-Romanian brand announcing a 200 km WLTP cycle. The Dacia Spring electric is already being billed as "Europe's most affordable 100% electric car".

Pollution rules are set to intensify in Europe, as all manufacturers will have to comply with less than 95 g/km of CO2 by 2021. And it's clear that no one has yet reached this barrier. As a result, brands are under threat of EU penalties for non-compliance. The solution? Offer electric and hybrid cars to their customers. Dacia, for example, must compensate for the CO2 emissions of its Duster, especially as this model is a success and therefore penalizes the carbon footprint of the brand and the group.

Dacia, simple pleasure

Why make things complicated when you can make them simple? Dacia's philosophy is to offer a range of attractive, quality vehicles at the best possible price. Today, Duster and Sandero are emblematic models for the brand. The Dacia offer, based on a smart approach, aims for simplicity and pleasure. Dacia is in step with the times.

The Dacia brand was created in 1966 in Romania. The brand's mission is to provide all Romanians with modern, sturdy family cars.

Dacia joins the Renault family

In 1999, the brand was acquired by the French brand Renault which modernized the historic Pitesti plant. A breakthrough was made in terms of quality. The difficult Romanian climate, poor road conditions and long distances across the Carpathian mountain range demanded vehicles of exemplary reliability.

In 2004, Dacia launches the family sedan " Logan "a symbol of the brand's revival, which broke all production records the following year.

In 2011, Dacia wins over 340,000 new customers in a single year, with its Pitesti plant running at full capacity.

In 2012, a new plant is inaugurated in Tangiers, which will enable the company to expand production, notably with the launch of the " Lodgy "a 5 & 7-seat family MPV, followed by the Dokker combispace and the Dokker Van.

In 2017, for the 3rd year running, Dacia confirmed its position as the 4th most purchased passenger car brand in France. A real record in just over 10 years of existence.

Today, more than a million French people have put their trust in Dacia, and have been won over by the reliability, practicality and fair pricing of our products.

Dacia's first electric car

Dacia will launch its first electric car in 2021. The low-cost brand of the Renault has confirmed this with the unveiling of its new Dacia Spring prototype. Originally scheduled for the 2020 Geneva Motor Show (cancelled due to the coronavirus).

The Dacia Spring is derived from the Renault K-ZE which will be launched on the Chinese market. Like the latter, the Dacia stands out for its small SUV look, with plastic protectors around the fenders, raised ground clearance, roof bars and protective skis. The gray tint and fluorescent orange elements give it a very attractive look. The vehicle also features equipment hitherto unavailable from the brand, such as 100% LED headlights. The car also has 4 real seats and 5 doors. Finally, this new Dacia model is equally at home in the city or in a mixed environment.

Dacia Spring electric: what we know about the car

Technical aspects

For the time being, Dacia has provided only fragmentary information on the technical aspects of the car.

The concept car is claimed to have a WLTP range of 200 kilometers.

The battery and motor could be identical to those of the little Renault K-ZE: 26.8 kWh powering a 45 hp motor. This may not sound like much power, but the Spring is primarily designed for urban and suburban use.

As for recharging, it could take as little as 30 minutes to recharge 80% of the battery (on a fast socket) and 4 hours to reach 100% (conventional socket).

The interior

The Spring concept car has no visible interior. However, the final vehicle will be derived from the Renault K-ZE.

It's a safe bet that the Renault group will retain the general architecture of this cabin, while adapting certain plastics to the high standards of European consumers.

Dimensions

As for dimensions. With a length of 3.73 meters, the Dacia Spring Electric fits right in between the mini and multi-purpose city cars.

  • Peugeot 108: 3.48 m
  • Volkswagen e-up! : 3,60 m
  • Renault Twingo : 3.61 m
  • Dacia Spring: 3.73 m
  • Toyota Yaris IV hybrid: 3.94 m
  • Peugeot e-208: 4.05 m
  • Renault Zoe : 4.08 m

Price

While we are aware of the year of release of the electric Dacia Spring, which should see the light of day at the beginning of the first half of 2021, the Romanian brand has remained surprisingly silent on an aspect that is nonetheless crucial when it comes to Dacia: pricing.

The price is expected to be between €15,000 and €20,000, excluding bonus. This could put the car at €10,000 with the bonus. Dacia will unveil the final version of the Spring later this year at the Paris Motor Show from October 1 to 11.

Dacia Spring electric: what you need to know

The electric Dacia Spring could revolutionize the electric car market by making this technology accessible to a wider range of users.

What's more, the electric Dacia Spring has a number of strong points, including :

  • Looks: SUVs are selling like hotcakes. Dacia has understood this and offers its 1st electric vehicle in the form of a city adventurer.
  • A size made for the city: At just 3.73 meters in length, the little electric SUV is cut out for the city. By comparison, a Dacia Sandero city car is 33 cm longer, at 4.06 meters. This compactness doesn't prevent it from offering 5 seats and a very decent trunk volume of 300 liters.
  • Generous production: Dacia plans to produce around 30,000 units a year in Europe.
  • Approved electric technology : For the moment, no technical data has been released on the Dacia Spring Electric . At best, we know that the range will exceed 200 kilometers. One thing is certain: Dacia will benefit from the know-how and experience of the Renault in this field. What remains to be seen is the power of the electric motor and the capacity of the battery.

It won't be the only low-cost electric car to appear in the next few years. Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly affordable, which should further boost the market for clean vehicles.
