Convincing an employee to switch to an electric car

Convincing electric car employees

As you know, the whole world is facing climate change which is impacting the planet, the environment and our health.

Since thermal means of transport are partly responsible for these changes (i.e. 71.1% of the European Union's CO2 emissions in 2019), electric mobility is one of the most rational solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. So it's up to us to adopt new ways of getting around, via electric cars.

While the government is encouraging companies to electrify their vehicle fleets (LOM law), it is also necessary to raise employee awareness of the need to adopt more eco-responsible gestures, and to involve them in the well-being of the environment. But how do you convince them to do so?

Why electrify your fleet?

As an employer with a fleet, you've probably heard of the LOM law of December 24, 2019. This law, put in place by the government, aims to accelerate and make a success of the ecological transition. Indeed, for France, and indeed Europe, the aim is toachieve carbon neutrality by 2050. How can this be achieved? By banning the sale of new combustion-powered cars (diesel or petrol) by 2040 for Europe and 2035 for France.

So, for this objective to be achieved, you need to talk to your employees about the various projects within the company, so that they too can contribute to reducing CO2 in the atmosphere.

What can you tell your employees about electric cars?

Are you a company manager planning to electrify your vehicle fleet by providing your employees with electric vehicles and and installing charging stations charging stations.

However, many people hear prejudices, myths and misconceptions about electric cars. myths about electric carsMany people, however, hear prejudices and myths about electric cars, such as that they are non-eco-responsible and too expensive to maintain, while forgetting all the advantages that electric vehicles can bring in the long term. This can lead to reluctance on the part of your employees.

So what can you say to your employees to convince them to switch to electric mobility?

Involve your employees in the company's energy transition project

Even before providing them with the answers, it's essential to inform your employees about the benefits of your project; explain the strategy that will be applied and the advantages that this change could bring to your company. benefits this change could bring to your company and the environment. You can do this through internal communications, such as informative e-mails.

By doing so, not only do you enable your employees to play an active role in your company's development, but you also boost your company's CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) of your company. This, in turn, will increase your employees' commitment.

Let your employees test drive electric cars

What if you let your employees try out an electric car? Test-driving an electric car gives your employees a greater chance of opting for one. To do this, you can organize test-drives of electric cars on, say, a work-home journey, explaining :

To give you an idea, Beev has also carried out some electric car tests. Here are a few of them:

What's more, according to many green car users, these motorists say they no longer want to change their vehicle, that they are satisfied with their purchase, as revealed by by Ipsos and Vinci Automobile.. According to them, 6 out of 10 French people consider that an electric vehicle would be suitable for their journeys!

Encourage your employees to spread the word

Another way to encourage your employees to switch to electric cars: word-of-mouth. This method is a good way of encouraging your employees' families, friends and even colleagues to use more environmentally-friendly means of getting around. Indeed, a positive testimonial generally has a positive impact on all the people to whom they share their experience.

The advantages of switching to electric cars

What you can do is tell your employees about the financial benefits an electric car could bring them. For example, you could tell them that the company provides electric cars. When you offer your employees an electric vehicle, in other words a company car, they will use it for business purposes.

You can also point out that an electric car has no noise pollution. Thermal vehicles cause noise pollution, which is particularly problematic in urban environments.

No recharging costs for company employees... or almost.

Since you're encouraging your employees to use electric cars, they'll probably ask you if they'll have to pay for recharging. Here too, you can reassure them that they will be able to recharge their electric vehicle directly at the office, thanks to the electric charging stations for employees that will be installed and paid for by the company.

Thus, there is no benefit in kind, but an exemption from social security contributions with 200 euros maximum per employee per year.

Good to know: As an employer, you are not required to cover the cost of refills for employees. In fact, according to the Labor Codethere is no obligation to cover these costs. However, it does become compulsory if the employee lives "in a commune not served by a regular public transport service or a private service set up by the employer".

PLEASE NOTE: FROM JANUARY 1ᵉʳ, 2025, FREE CHARGING OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES AT WORK WILL NO LONGER BE AVAILABLE TO EMPLOYEES.

Speaking of refills, Beev offers a free recharge cardwhich you can use at over 300,000 public recharging points across Europe. The card is eligible for both private and corporate use. You can offer it to your employees and, as a bonus, reimburse them for their top-up.

Encouraging your employees to use electric cars is all well and good, but what's more important? charging stations at work and at home is even better.is even better.

While charging stations are in the minority in the face of growing demand for electric cars (with a 9.2% increase in registrations between between August 2021 and August 2022), we need to make charging points available in charging points in individual homes, second home or in condominiums.

By installing a charging station on their premises, you're helping them to make the energy transition and to get the most out of their vehicles. What's more, you're give them the opportunity to recharge their vehicle during off-peak periodswhen the cost of recharging is much lower than during the day.

In addition to supporting them in their efforts, you're showing your employees that you're attentive to their needs and concerned about their comfort. This can be a great way to boost your employer brand and even attract future employees.

What's more, if you'd like to install bollards, there are a number of ways in which you can receive financial assistanceto help reduce costs.

Suggest carpooling to your employees

This idea can complement what was said earlier about offering your employees the chance to carpool with their colleagues.

This practice is also a way of reducing your carbon footprint, worth "of 1.6 million tons of CO2 saved" in France in 2018, according to BlaBlaCar. Speaking of this platform, their service BlaBlacar Dailyservice, launched in 2018, was set up to provide journeys between home and work. In addition to carpooling between colleagues, this will strengthen social ties and possibly team cohesion within the company.

In addition to reducing your carbon footprint, carpooling saves your employees money, at a time when France, and indeed the whole world, is facing skyrocketing fuel prices for example.
